Daly Second Grade News December Edition

Important Dates:

· December 24th to January 1st - No School – Winter break

Curriculum Notes:

Reading: Students will review making predictions and story elements. Students will read nonfiction levels to be texts to be informed. They will identify and use text features to help their comprehension. Students will complete a BCR (brief constructed response) based on an appropriate leveled reading text. BCR’s will be scored using the MSA rubric.

Math: Students will begin unit 3 – adding and subtracting 2- and 3- digit numbers. They will solve addition and subtraction problems using models and number sentences. Students will also identify missing numbers in sentences.

Spelling: Students will study short a and short e sounds. The spelling test for words with the short a sound is on December 11th. The spelling test for the words with the short e sound is on December 23rd.

Writing/Grammar: Students will continue writing to inform. They will develop their writing through writer’s workshop, which includes a mini lesson taught by the teacher, independent writing and conferencing with peers, and sharing their final drafts to the class. Students will continue to develop correct usage of capital letters, punctuation, and writing complete sentences.

Social Studies: Students will examine the different types of physical features. Students will also explore the culture of the Wampanoag Native Americans.

Science: Students will begin unit 2 of science – liquids. Students will classify and identify objects by their properties.
